About Your Body Mass Index (BMI)

There are many reasons why you should maintain a healthy lifestyle. One of the largest motivating factors for some is that keeping a healthy lifestyle means fewer visits to the doctor. Less medical attention results in more money saved.

One effective way of monitoring and maintaining your health is to keep track of your body mass index, or BMI. Your BMI is a number that indicates whether or not your body weight, when compared to your height, falls within a range of healthy weights. Unfortunately, it does not measure your body fat, so it may be a bit off for those with much muscle mass. Overall, however, it generally serves as a good gauge of whether a person is underweight, overweight, or a normal, healthy weight.

Your BMI is calculated by dividing your body weight by the square of your height (in standard units). It is then compared to a number of ranges that define being underweight, normal, overweight, or obese:

  • Underweight: BMI below 18.5
  • Normal: BMI of 18.5-24.9
  • Overweight: BMI of 25-29.9
  • Obese: BMI of 30 and above

By keeping your BMI within the healthy range, you can expect fewer health problems and, therefore, fewer visits to the doctor as you age.
