Barriers to Proper Childhood Nutrition

Children need proper nutrition in order to grow and stay healthy. However, many kids in the United States do not get the nutrition that they need, mainly because they do not have access to the proper types of food. This can be lead to a variety of health conditions, including obesity, undernourishment, and resulting medical problems.

There are countless reasons why a child may not have access to healthy foods. Sometimes a family lacks the financial means to provide enough food in general. However, often children suffer from poor nutrition because parents are under-informed of nutritional issues or because of geographical constraints.

  • Many families live in areas where nutritional foods are not readily available. Many neighborhoods are food deserts, meaning that the neighborhood in not in close proximity to a market or grocery store. Especially if a family lacks access to a vehicle or public transportation, it can be difficult to get to a store in order to purchase nutritional foods. It is much easier to eat at a nearby fast food restaurant or buy dry goods or prepackaged foods from a convenience store.
  • Many people have no time to cook or to visit the grocery store. If a person works long hours or well into the evening, a grocery store might be closed, or dinner time for children may have already passed. Especially when coupled with a lack of adequate transportation to the store, workers with odd hours may not have access to nutritional foods.
  • Many adults do not understand proper nutrition. If an adult does not understand proper nutrition, it is much more likely that their child will suffer from inadequate nutrition as well. Many adults do not understand the negative effects of high-fat, high-sugar, low nutritional content foods, and therefore simply do not choose healthy foods for kids. As a result, kids develop poor eating habits.
  • Many adults do not know how to cook. Healthy foods can be inexpensive if prepared at home. However, many adults have never learned to cook, and pre-prepared healthy food can be expensive. Because of this, many people buy processed foods for their families rather than preparing healthy alternatives at home.
