New Provisions under the Affordable Care Act
For individuals who were uninsured, the Act now provides for certain options and imposes new regulations. These regulations and options are dependent on a person or family’s income and are as follows:
- Individuals ($14,400 or less) & family of four ($29,327 or less) – May enroll in Medi-Cal and only need to pay $1 or $5 copayments
- Individuals ($14,400 – $43,320) & family of four ($29,327 – $88,200) – Able to buy subsidized private insurance guaranteed to offer at least 60% of health care costs with a limit from 2 – 9.5% on premiums.
- Individuals (greater than $43,320) & family of four (greater than $88,200) – must buy private insurance and can be charged penalties of maximum 2.5% of income if they do not get insurance.
