Medical Identity Theft
Medical identity theft is fast becoming a widespread problem that costs numerous parties large amounts of money. This crime occurs when someone fraudulently assumes another person’s identity in order to obtain medical services, drugs, or treatment that he or she normally would not be able to afford or access.
In 2007, approximately 500,000 Americans were estimated to be victims of this crime, and since then, the number of victims has grown. With so many medical records kept on electronic databases, they have become more accessible to thieves. This is one likely reason why medical identity theft has become more and more common.
Many people do not realize that they have been victims of medical identity theft until they receive large bills for expensive treatments they never received. Not only does this cause them financial turmoil, but it also sparks needless worries and annoyance. Medical identity theft also costs insurance companies extra money because they must pay for treatment received by non-covered individuals.
Sometimes, people will steal names, Social Security numbers, and other personal information in order to receive medical attention under another’s account. This way, they don’t have to pay for such costly care. Other times, people will steal insurance policy information in order to essentially piggyback onto your coverage plan. Finally, fraudulent medical workers may sometimes attempt to make money by stealing medical information and selling it to outside parties, who then use it to receive care at no cost to them.
