What is a Primary Care Physician?
Primary care physicians, otherwise known as PCPs, are named as such because they are the first medical professionals that most patients visit when they develop a health problem. In general, care provided by PCPs is covered in insurance plans like HMOs and PPOs. If you are covered by one of these plans (as well as some private insurance plans), then you should be able to select a primary care physician.
Types of Primary Care Physicians
There are four types of doctors that may act as primary care physicians:
- Internist – physician that practices general medicine but also specializes in another area of practice
- Family practitioner – physician that specializes in health care for all family members (children included)
- Pediatrician – physician that specializes in health care for children
- Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OBGYN) – physician that specializes in health care for women
Any of these four medical professionals may be used as your PCP, although you will need to check first with your specific plan before selecting a primary care physician.
What Primary Care Physicians Do for You
In addition to being the first doctor you visit when experiencing a medical ailment, PCPs also hold a number of different roles, as well. If you have a chronic illness or condition, your PCP will manage its treatment. PCPs, being general practitioners, will also diagnose and administer treatment if you are suffering a minor ailment. If you have a more complex or aggressive illness or injury, then your PCP will likely refer you to a specialist.
