The Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development released data regarding hospitalizations in the state of California.
The numbers show that 335,000 hospitalizations could have been prevented if the adult patients were able to see a doctor beforehand. These preventable hospitalizations are largely due to a lack of primary healthcare insurance in the state of California.
The numbers used in the data are from 2009, and show a slight increase in preventable hospitalizations from the numbers gathered in 2008. In 2008 there were 317,050 cases, as compared to 335,000 cases just one year later.

Seven different California surgery centers are facing a lawsuit by Aetna Inc. in regards to overcharging the insurance company for aiding their clients.
When an individual goes into a medical center that is not covered by their insurance, they are supposed to pay a co-payment in order to balance out the costs with their insurance provider. These surgery centers in California were bypassing these payments in order to bill Aetna almost 2,500 percent more than what the surgery was supposed to cost.
For example, a bunion repair surgery at one of these centers cost the insurance company $66,100. Aetna, Inc. believes that the doctors at these surgery centers are splitting the profits of the extra money, and are also referring clients to the medical centers whose insurance plans have the most leeway.

According to the MIB Life Index, sales for life insurance in the United States in 2011 was slightly higher than the previous year.
The sales in December 2011 helped contribute a small overall gain of 0.2 percent for the fiscal year. December saw a 5.8 percent increase in life insurance sales compared to December 2010. In years past, the index was losing money each year and since 2007 had lost roughly four percent of profits.
Each age group measured in the index saw an incline in sales at the end of 2011. In November 2011 there was no positive change in the amount of life insurance purchases. The last quarter of the year is the strongest quarter for profit in life insurance but the other three quarters are covering more ground and proving more beneficial than in years’ past.

That number of uninsured women increased from 2007 to 2009 by 3 percent, resulting in 24 percent who were uninsured. Researchers believe this number was high due to the economic recession.
