California Managed Business Health Plans

Most businesses that offer health insurance to their employees use some kind of managed care plan. In this kind of system, a company obtains one insurance policy to cover all workers. In contrast, individual policies only cover one person and maybe his or her family. Managed care plans are often attractive to businesses for their simplicity and relatively low costs.

The most common California group insurance plans are:

• Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs): In this kind of policy, employees choose a primary care doctor from a list of approved physicians. They pay a monthly premium, which may be partly paid by their employers. In return, they only need to pay a $10 or $20 co-pay for nearly any healthcare provided by their network.
• Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs): These are structured similarly to an HMO, with a network of insurance company-approved healthcare providers. Employees may get care outside of the network, but it will be more expensive. The premiums for a PPO are often higher, but they provide more healthcare choices for employees.
• Point of Service (POS): POS plans combine elements from HMOs and PPOs. Employees will choose a primary care physician from a list, but will be able to seek care outside of their network if they are willing to pay the extra cost.
