The Four Components of Medicare

Medicare insurance coverage is composed of four different parts. You may choose to utilize all of them, or you may only pick the ones that seem helpful to you. They include:

  • Part A: Hospital coverage. This is the basic component of Medicare; the rest are considered add-ons. It covers hospital stays, nursing home care following a hospital stay, hospice care, and certain other medical costs.
  • Part B: Medical insurance. When you register for Medicare, Part B will be included in your plan as the default. However, you may opt out if you do not want to pay for it. It primarily covers routine care.
  • Part C: Medicare Advantage. This is a combination of Parts A and B with certain other benefits and coverage added. It has higher premiums, but can be a good option if it is affordable for you.
  • Part D: Prescription drug coverage. This will help you pay for any medicine a doctor prescribes you.

Costs and Coverage

California Medicare Part A is available for free to certain eligible people. You are likely eligible if you or your spouse is at least 65 and qualifies for Social Security benefits. You may also be eligible if you or your spouse has certain conditions or disabilities. Some people who are not eligible for free coverage may be able to obtain it for a monthly premium.

Even if Part A is free for you, Parts B, C, and D require regular payments. The amount can vary from year to year and person to person, so contact one of our California health insurance brokers to learn more.
